Our Journey
DesleeMattex (previously known as Mattex) was established in 1962. In March 2010 DesleeMattex signed a Joint Venture Agreement with Deslee Clama which attained a 40 percent share. Deslee Clama is an international textile company based in Belgium with factories in Romania, the United States, Indonesia & Brazil and sales offices in Spain, Singapore & India.
This partnership enables DesleeMattex to offer Africa locally produced world class mattress fabric with technology that offers the end-consumer the ultimate sleeping solution. DesleeMattex has state-of-the-art air jet looms and circular knitting equipment, with an extrusion plant and finishing line. DesleeMattex has a strong focus on lean manufacturing principles and center their attention on customer satisfaction.
During the year of 2016 Deslee Clama merged with Bekaert Textiles, one of the biggest mattress fabric suppliers in the world and also based in Belgium. Now DesleeMattex is part of an even bigger, more experienced and knowledgeable group called Bekaert Deslee with 19 factories around the world.
DesleeMattex supplies technology driven, first grade mattress fabric with stylish patterns inspired by world décor and fashion trends and complimented with popular colours. Our product range spreads from economical, low weight soft fabrics with modern geometric designs to plush, luxurious fabrics fit for a King’s bedroom with complementing upholstery type fabrics for the border and base turning the traditional mattress into an item of furniture.
Our customers are able to utilise customised designs to promote their individual brands in the retail market. Thanks to their local present product development team innovation, design and product development are attuned more closely to the local market’s needs and supported with global trends by the group’s International Development Centre (IDC), based in Belgium.
Our People
DesleeMattex employs 158 people at its plant in Cape Town, with sales representation in Johannesburg, Durban and Sub-Saharan regions. Due to the technical nature of the operation and with their commitment to training and development, DesleeMattex staff is highly skilled in the various disciplines of production.
DesleeMattex draws its workforce from the greater Cape Town area and specialised skills are sourced through close relationships with their international partner and suppliers.
In 2014 their training centre was SETA certified with a NQF Level 2 accreditation. DesleeMattex maintains an on-going in-service training program which includes assistance to staff in advanced training through local tertiary institutions as well as international training at our associated Bekaert Deslee plants.
They also offer a yearly learnerships program for unemployed people of the community to experience manufacturing and after successful completion of the 9 month program possible employment. Through this program they have successfully employed 31 people.
Competitive Environment
The changing international business climate with specific reference to the re-admission of South Africa as a political and economic entity has had a significant impact on DesleeMattex as well as most other South African businesses.
Increased exposure and competition has ensured that international standards of quality, service and lean manufacturing principals are essential to survival.
The increase in imports into South Africa has also forced South African businesses to re-address existing supply relationships, for suppliers to establish and maintain internationally competitive business standards and practices offering value added products and services.
In this environment, DesleeMattex has aligned itself with the Deslee Clama principles to improve on the standards lean manufacturing, quality, service, product development, technological advances with supported marketing material support.
DesleeMattex is now part of the Global Sleep Organisation bringing the benefits of to Bed Manufactures as the preferred local partner supplier within Southern African Region.
Location
Encompassing an area of over 19000 m², the plant is situated approximately 17km from the centre of Cape Town and situated in an established industrial development area.
Logistically, a comprehensive road freight network services the company. The proximity to Cape Town port allows DesleeMattex to enjoy quick and efficient access to the harbour and all international sea freight routes.
Customer Base
DesleeMattex traditional customer base has been the South African bedding and related markets. DesleeMattex is one of the largest jacquard weaving plants in the country.
As such, DesleeMattex is the principal supplier of jacquard woven fabric to the entire South African bedding market.
